Rock gardens can be started from scratch on slopes which are too steep for the lawnmower or much else. Ferns and perennials will do fine in a shady rock garden.
In a steep slope you should do the rocks first before doing the plants around them.Choose stones with character, that have interesting shapes and maybe moss or lichen. Make sure your rocks are buried about half way in so as not to fall down the slope. Low growing perennials such as creeping phlox, alyssum, thyme, thrift and speedwell work wonderfully.
There are many types of rock, when you select one think of where you want to use it. Use the same type of stone throughout the garden area. If you can find one with a dip or bowl in it you can fill it with soil and plant moss or sedum in it
Great places to find rocks for landscaping are river beds, construction sites, a rock quarry, and landscaping supply stores
